Stakeholders

Many people work together to make the city. It is important to involve stakeholders from the beginning to create support and generate appropriate ideas. This increases the chances of greater quality and success.

All projects in urban space are developed through the collaboration of different people and organisations such as municipalities, housing corporations, developers, city inhabitants and designers. Usually projects are organized linearly: the developer choses an architect and discusses the plan with the municipality. Only in later stages are other stakeholders such as water and green specialists involved. Therefore, the different disciplines within a project usually work on it separately.

Creating a climate resilient city, however, asks for an integral approach. When developing a green wadi, it is necessary for different stakeholders such as traffic experts, sewage specialists and green specialists to work together. The traffic expert has their interest in creating efficient infrastructure, but this takes up space and therefore negotiation with the other stakeholders is necessary. It is therefore more efficient and usually more successful to involve all stakeholders at the start of the process. To include them and have them participate in the design makes for a broadly supported and accepted plan. Thanks to this initial collaboration, other issues such as financing and long-term maintenance can also already be discussed.

The process of urban transformation thus involves a multitude of stakeholders. Next to collaboration in the design, construction and maintenance, agreements are also necessary on the governance and societal level. On this page the different stakeholders within the process of city climate adaptation are discussed, with a short description containing their role, interests and barriers for each of them.
